Nitrous oxide use in dental therapy shows far greater effectiveness than that used during childbirth for several reasons. Firstly, what you might have been given during labour is a premixed oxygen to nitrous oxide formulation that likely didn’t have the right ratios specific to you. Secondly, if inhaled through the mouth during your labour, this may not provide a constant dose, as opposed to through our specialised nose pieces. Lastly, when you are given the gas in labour, you are already in pain, making it harder to establish the required augmented mental state. Most people find happy gas in the dental setting far superior in terms of pain reduction and the induced state of bliss.
Nitrous oxide is considered very safe, so there are very few contra-indications. However, because of a possible increased risk of miscarriage or induced early labour, those who are pregnant are best to avoid this therapy unless given clearance by the treating obstetritian. Recent eye surgery or acute middle infections could also preclude use. Whilst nitrous oxide works well for a vast majority or people, there are a few where the intended states cannot be achieved completely. It is best to speak to your nitrous oxide trained dentist first to assess if you are a good candidate for happy gas.
Nitrous oxide dentistry can be used safely to complete whatever treatment is planned, no matter how large or small it is. But, like any medication, it still needs to be moderated to avoid any ill effects. No more than a couple of hours at a time, and avoid using daily, and no long term effects should be experienced.
